10 years of the Lunches for Children project

After a report about starving children aired on CT's 168 Hours, we knew that W4W had to solve the problem. And so on 12 September 2013 - spontaneously and quickly - the W4W: Lunches for Children project was born. The first children had lunch on 1 October of the same year.

Thanks to our knowledge and experience, a research mapping the real situation of single parents was created. We forwarded the results to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs to draw attention to a hidden problem. The MoLSA subsequently decided to support the W4W: Lunches for Children project.

The W4W: Lunches for Children project received the auspices of the Ministry of Education and W4W became a member of the Ministry of Education's working group called "School Lunches". In the same year, the project received the patronage of the Union of Towns and Municipalities of the Czech Republic and the Association of Regions of the Czech Republic. NIVEA became the main partner of the project.

A survey carried out by W4W at the end of the 2015/2016 school year to evaluate the impact of the aid showed that the lunches not only fill children up, but also improve their school attendance and performance, help them integrate better into the team, and make them more enterprising, confident, calm and focused.

The project received significant financial support from the Ministry of Education within the framework of the subsidy programme for non-governmental non-profit organisations to support school meals for primary school pupils. Following negotiations with W4W, the MoE launched the "School Lunches" project for disadvantaged children from kindergartens and primary schools, funded by the European FEAD programme.

In April, the project was chosen by members of the American band Metallica and, as part of their European tour European tour and a concert in Prague, they supported it with a donation of 485 thousand euros. The project was supported by a 485 CZK donation from Metallica. In the following year, the group donated almost CZK 1.8 million to the project. In October, the world tennis player Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena visited the school in Prague 4 and supported the project.

In 2019, the amount paid by parents for one month of school lunches was around 500 CZK per child. In the 2019/2020 school year, the national average price for a school lunch increased from CZK 25 to CZK 26 compared to the previous year. The highest average price of lunch - CZK 29, which is one crown more than in the previous year, was recorded in Prague.

In 2020, we were invited to attend a meeting of the Frydlant City Council and a training session for school principals and school canteen managers of the Pardubice Region. We also visited Pilsen, where we received the very important award of Patron of Pilsen Education, which made us very happy!

How did the W4W: Lunches for Children during the pandemic project work? "Your project was one of the few that did not get lost even in such a complex tangle of ever-changing regulations, helping to bridge us, educators and our students from a sense of hopelessness back to hope that not everything has stopped. Your continued help has been a great support and motivation," wrote one of the schools involved.

During the 2021/2022 school year, the average price of school lunches in each region ranged between 31 and 38 CZK. The biggest increase was in Prague, where the average price of school lunches increased from CZK 31 to CZK 38 in the second half of 2022. This year, the project managed to feed almost 19,000 schoolchildren, which represented school lunches worth more than CZK 60 million in total.
